Roofing it!

Jack and I have spent countless hours cutting, sanding, staining and sealing the frame. Almost as many hours have been put in clearing and prepping the build site. We have had many wonderful conversations and adventures over our time together with the build. However, many hours go by with few words. It is a mutual understanding of the detailed work that needs to be done and concentration on the work at hand.

Managing a full-time business and being part of a busy household, many more hours of work has been done by myself at early hours or late nights, as well.

The last couple weeks have been a welcome change from the solitude of labor over the last months. I cannot thank the community of friends that have shown up to put their own blood, sweat and tears into timber frame.

Today's work is another day of heights as we install center matched tung and groove paneling. I sourced this paneling from a lumber mill located 30 minutes away. The quality is AMAZING! The same wood will be used in many parts of the interior, as well. Not all wood is created equal. While many think of larger box building suppliers when doing DIY projects, I cannot stress enough getting to know your local lumber yard and mill. The grade and quality is head over heels better than anything one can pick themselves and you won't have have to pick through bins of warped, split lumber....

Installing boards on top of the rafters allows us to face nail directly into the rafter. This makes for a fast and very secure finished install.

I spent the last days pre-painting each board. Not having to cut edges after the install is a huge bonus of painting the boards before.

Each panel serves two purposes. First and foremost, they form the finished ceiling. Second, they allow us to tweak the entire frame for perfect square before the SIPs arrive. Fingers crossed, we will see sips by the beginning of next week!
